Both, the gear you will use, as the gear your summoned companion will use, can be improved by binding on their slots those enchantments that better fitted with your class,specialty and goals.

1. Enchantments Types and Slots

Some equipment pieces will show a slot on them which can allocate a bonded enchantment. This will provide to you more powers, skills and abilities, depending what kind of enchantment were you binding and in what type of slot.

Artifacts can unlock more enchantments slots as you improved their quality.

Weapon Enchantment (Only available in the main hand item)
Armor Enchantment (Only available in the armor item)
Offense Enchantment (Available in main hand, offhand, rings and other pieces)
Defense Enchantment (Available in arms, rings and other pieces)
Utility Enchantment (Available in head, feet, neck, belt and other pieces)
Overflow Enchantment (For temporary enchantments, available in some pieces)

2. Enchantment Ranks

An enchantment can be found at different Rank, to be upgraded from there to upper ranks through the refining system. Although, this is recommended to check the most efficient Rank and acquire it to upgrade yourself from that point.

level 70, through the Vistani Set, you are getting for free Rank 8 enchants on all the pieces, and Rank 6 for your following characters after the first one getting it.
